PBA

AKA the Pledge Brother Alumni Hockey Contest

The House has a long tradition of playing intramural hockey, partly due to its location as walkable to the Field House. In fact, there have been years where it was cold enough to flood the back yard and make a rink to practice when we didn’t have official ‘ice time’. Many look back fondly on their late night games with Modu, Sprunt, or other teams they were part of. Of late, the actives have not fielded a team, and some have no idea of this rich history.

In 2026, the Corporation renamed “PBA” to the “Jim Flaherty #383 PBA” to honor this brother’s unwavering commitment to keep the intramural hockey tradition alive at the House. He worked diligently to get alumni out to skate throughout the years, and revived it as the RPI COVID restrictions were easing back.

We’ve been rebuilding ever since, thanks to his determination.

One challenge is that we pair our event with the Big Red Freakout, and RPI Athletics doesn’t give a lot of lead time. This often makes conflicts with alumni. We will try to give as much lead time as we can. PS: The Actives appreciate Alumni donating $ to rent ice time and get a block of tickets to the Freakout.

Here are a few pictures from our hockey matches over the years.
